Personal History:
No trace can be found of a 'Francis' family living in the Buxton area in any of the relevant Censuses. There are 22 "J W Francis" of a possible age  named on the 1911 Census, but none lived in the Buxton area.

Military History:
There are no obvious records on the CWGC or SDGW Databases. the CWGC identifies 3 "Privates" with the initials "J. W." who were killed in the Great War. However, the SDGW has none listed as "Born", "Enlisted" or "Living" in the Buxton area.

Of the three, one is South African, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Worrall Francis, of "Mirembe," Church St., Wynberg, Cape Province. The other two are Pt. 12917 John Walter FRANCIS (11/Essex Regiment) - from Colchester, and Pt. 200694 John William FRANCIS (4/Royal Welsh Fusiliers) - but again with no apparent link to the area. John Walter Francis was born in Elmstead, Essex, and enlisted in Colchester. He was Killed in action on the 25th September 1916. John William was a resident of Ruabon, Denbigh, and enlisted in Wrexham. He died of wounds on the 28th March 1918.
