Personal History:
There is only 1 male named "V Holmes"  on the 1911 Census, living in Derbyshire, and he was born in 1909! Neither, did anyone with those initials die in the Buxton area around the time of the building of the Buxton War Memorial.

Military History:
There are no obvious records on the CWGC or SDGW Databases. The CWGC identifies only one "V. R. Holmes" - Lt. Vernon Rains Holmes, 6th Battalion, Cheshire Regiment, from Manchester.  There is also just one "Private" with the single initial "V" killed in the Great War, Pt. Victor Holmes, 14th Battalion, York and Lancaster Regiment, from Barnsley, Yorkshire - killed on the first day of the Battle of the Somme.

The SDGW database has just the same "Private Holmes", with the single initial "V", but not listed as "Born", "Enlisted" or "Living" in the Buxton area.
